Make Time to Check Your Numbers

Being the Boss

This tip is an oldie but a goodie- you have to make time to check your numbers. If you don’t already have money dates / meetings / check-ins on your calendar, schedule those now. My general suggestion is to do this at least every two weeks, but if you’re just starting out with these, start with weekly.

You only need to schedule 15-20 minutes MAX to check your numbers (especially if you’re doing them weekly).

But get them on the calendar now! Choose a time that you know you won’t be disturbed or will likely have to shift.

And here’s the key – for each week, write down (on a sticky note, in your planner, or in the calendar invite itself) ONE treat you will give yourself after you do your money meeting. It can be tangible (like a cocktail!) or intangible (binge that show you’ve been excited about on Netflix). Just find something that will make you happy. Because yes, the money stuff does suck sometimes.

What should you do during this meeting? We’ve got lots of great resources for you inside of our Biz Money Blueprint, but start simple with these 3 steps:

✅ Categorize the transactions from the past week in your accounting system

✅ Review your money coming in (revenues) and money going out (expenses) to see if there are any things you need to act on (reach out for more sales or cut an expense you don’t need, for example)

✅ Check your bank account balance so you know how much cash you’ve got to pay your upcoming bills

Set a timer for 15-20 minutes. If you’re not done, stop anyway. You can always pick it up next week.
