I get asked this question a lot: are online courses really working? Can you really make money by creating an online course? I love this question because, if you’ve been following my blog for a while now, you know I’m a numbers girl. But aside from that, I love it because it gives me the chance to clarify some misconceptions about online courses.   

It usually goes one of two ways. Sometimes, the misconception is that you will make a gazillion dollars if you make an online course. Other times, the misconception is that the online course industry is full and you’re not gonna make any money, plus, why would anyone buy your online course? Neither of those is the real story. The real story is somewhere in the middle.   

But the big message here is, it takes time to build a successful online course business. That does not mean that you won’t see success the first time you launch your online course. It means that you need to recognize that everything that successful online course creators do, they’re doing it over time.   

The real score

At the beginning, it can sometimes feel like you’re failing. If you launch your course and only 1 person buys the first time, that can be soul-crushing. It does not mean though that your online course business failed. It just means (and I say this whether this is your 1st or your 10th launch), that you need to take the data and information that you’ve collected from that course launch and use it to make the next one even better.
